WALK TO THE ROOF OF THE FRENCH VOSGES (1415m) AND ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL NATURE

  …Breathtaking views, hard & steep climbs, technical downhills and a finish on top of the highest mountain of the Vosges

The race office and the start of all distances are located in the small ski village ‘Le Markstein’ at an altitude of 1145m. All day long shuttle buses will travel up and down to the finish at the top of the Grand Ballon, 7km away.

Registration opens December 1st and for the first edition there are only 750 spots available.

The Walk du Grand Ballon is the 2nd stage of the 3 days event Walk for the Cure / Vosges.

Registration opens Dec 1st 2018. We only have 300 start tickets available and we have a first come first serve base.
The entry fee for participation in the 3-day event Walk for The Cure depends on the chosen distances:

STARTER – 90 euro

TOTAL DISTANCE LESS THAN 65KM

PRO – 120 euro

TOTAL DISTANCE MORE THAN 65KM

The minimum distance is 20 + 12 + 24 = 56km. The maximum distance is 34 + 42 + 24 = 100km

Entry Fee includes: participation in the 3 day event – free use of the shuttle bus (stage 2) – finisher T-shirt & medal Walk for the Cure – pasta meal on sunday afternoon – aid stations during the walk. Not included: accommodation and an administration fee

Registration opens Dec 1ste 2018. For the Walk du Grand Ballon we have 500 extra tickets available on top of the 300 tickets of the Walk for the Cure. We have a first come first serve base.
The entry fee for participation in the Walk du Grand Ballon is

All distances start in Le Markstein and end on top of the Grand Ballon. There are free shuttle buses between finish and Le Markstein.

42km – 2300m+

Start @ 7.15 – After 1 undulating loop of 12km the hikers reach the first feed station at Auberge de Steinlebach (1k from start). There they start their first big descent to Saint-Amarin, where feed station 2 is located. After a quick ascent & descent of the col de Dreimarkstein the hikers reach feed station 3 in Moosch before they tackle the last 10km with 1000m+ to finish on top of the Grand Ballon

21km – 1050m+

Start @ 9.45AM – After 1 undulating loop of 12km the hikers reach the first feed station at Auberge de Steinlebach (1k from start). Then they continue to the second aidstation. After that the last climb of the day awaits 4km with 400m+ to the finish on top of the Grand Ballon.

Start @ 13.15 – After 1 undulating loop of 3k the hikers reach Auberge de Steinlebach (1k from start). Then they continue to the aidstation at 7k. After that the the last climb of the day awaits 4km with 400m+ to finish on top of the roof of the Vosges – the Grand Ballon

PROGRAM

Mandatory race registration and pick-up race numbers for the marathon Challenge on Friday in Hotel Wolf between 17.00 and 21.00. Race office will be closed before the start of the 42k on Saturday! Participants of the 1/2 marathon Challenge or 12km can pick up the race bags on Friday AND on Saturday.

FACEBOOK

PARKING

Parking at the start in Le Markstein and NOT on top of the Grand Ballon. A shuttle bus (free for athletes) will take you back to the start.

DOUCHES

Changing rooms and showers are available in Auberge de Steinlebach, 2km from the start in Le Markstein. Both are complimentary and free or charge

FREE SHUTTLE

Free shuttle bus (free for athletes) between 10.00 and 21.00. The Bus takes athletes back to start and spectators to/from finish and start

DOGS

Dogs are not allowed on the course as some parts are located in a natura2000 zone where it is strictly forbidden for dogs. Forest rangers will give you a fine of 150 euro!

MANDATORY KIT

Mandatory kit: a working phone, at least half a litre of water and a raincoat in case of bad weather.

cut off

The cut off time for the 42km is 12h, for the 21km 6h30h and for the 12km 4h. If you do not make these cut off times you will be asked to stop the race.

VOLUNTEER

You are not participating, but would love to be part of the race ? join our crew and help us out at the race office or at an aidstation. You can distribute medals / T-shirts at the finish.

AID STATIONS

Along the walk, aid stations with water, sports-drinks, coke, fruit, cake, crackers etc. are available. For the location of the aid stations see ‘course information’ above.

T-SHIRT

You have the possibility to purchase an optional Walk du Grand Ballon T-shirt for 12 euro with your online registration.

GPX DOWNLOAD

The GPX files will be available for downloading one week before the event through Trace de Trail. Before and after this period the files cannot be downloaded.

CHARITY

Our organisation supports Think Pink, the breast cancer awareness campaign. You have the possibility to make a donation to this cause with your online registration.

NO PLASTIC

There are NO plastic cups at the aid stations. Everybody has to carry his/her own reusable cup or drinking system.

LIVE

During the race, supporters can follow the participants using our live tracking, which will be visible in a banner on the top of this page. There will be several check points along the course.

WASTE

We ask all participants to respect the natural environment and not litter. If you fail to do so, you will be disqualified.

Leave nothing but footprints!

Medical

In France a medical certificate is mandatory when participating in sport events. Please present a copy when you pick up your race number.

INSURANCE

Participants are insured  by the organisation for any injury during the Walk du Grand Ballon.

POLES

Trekking poles are permitted during this race. Please make sure not to hinder other participants with them.

TIMING CHIP

There is a timing chip attached to the back of your bib. Checkpoints along the way will register your split times. Do not bend the chip and wear your bib number clearly visible on the front of your torso.

WHEATER

The weather in august usually is warm & hot. If a thunderstorm occurs temperature can drop more then 20° and on the summits it can be cold

Where to stay near the Grand Ballon?

HOTEL WOLF – The start and our race office (registration) of the Walk du Grand Ballon. This hotel has a beautiful panorama over the French Vosges. You can reserve single rooms, double rooms of familly rooms. There different possibilities : Only breakfast, half pension or full pension.

AUBERGE DE STEINLEBACH – will be one of the hotspots for the fans and supporters and it will also be one of the aid stations. 5 minutes from Le Markstein by car and 15 minutes by foot. You can reserve a room at a very low price and there are a lot of possibilities : Dormitory or single/double room with or without breakfast, half pension or full pension.

HOTEL DU GRAND BALLON – This hotel is located right on top of the Grand Ballon. If you want to take a shower at 50m from the finish line, you have to book 1 of the 25 rooms…

Lots of accommodations can be found in La Bresse, Gerardmer, Colmar…
Because it is the middle of summer season, we recommend to book your stay as early as possible !
